Some think it’s fake, some think it’s gimmicky and some think it’s innovative. Redmi Note 7 48MP Camera: The Truth Revealed!
The Redmi Note 7 launched with 48MP camera on the back, It is Samsung’s 48 MP ISOCELL Bright GM1 Sensor and even Xiaomi brands it as 48 megapixel camera so where exactly is the doubt.
Well there are various questions so let’s start…
Does the Redmi Note 7 truly have a 48MP Camera?
So let’s start with whether the Note 7 truly has a 48-megapixel sensor, the ISOCELL GM1 Sensor in the Redmi Note 7 is a 48MP sensor but it’s a little more complex than that. Where four pixels are merged to work as one to increase light sensitivity, the GM1 can deliver light sensitivity equivalent to that of a 1.6μm-pixel image sensor at 12Mp resolution. The sensor also supports Gyro-based electronic image stabilization (EIS) for fast and accurate image capture.
REDMI NOTE 7 TIPS AND TRICKS AND HIDDEN FEATURES
The GM1 basically uses a single 2×2 area of pixels for capturing red light another 2×2 array for capturing blue light and two 2×2 arrays to capture green light so the sensor does, in fact, have 48 million pixels but since 4 pixels are technically combined to capture one color.
The final output is an image of 48 divided by 4, that’s 12 megapixels.
Which is clearly within the Snapdragon 660 capability and that’s the reason why the camera in the Note 7 only supports 12-megapixel images in the Auto mode. Even the various specs apps show the camera specification on the Redmi Note 7 as 12 megapixels so yes Redmi Note 7 ISOCELL GM1 48MP Sensor does not support 48 Megapixel output natively, even though it is a 48 Megapixel camera sensor.
What does the 48MP sensor offer?
Fitting up whopping 48 million pixels on a tiny smartphone camera sensor means that the pixel sizes are really small in fact the pixels in the GM1 sensor are just 0.8 μm.
However Tetracell technology, aka pixel binning combines 4.8 μm pixel to create one large pixel of 1.6 μm and well larger the pixel size is the more light it can capture which means brighter low-light photos.
Here’s how the Note 7 12MP pixel size compares to other 12MP phones. When it’s clear that the pixel size of the Note 7 in 12MP is bigger than the pixel size in even flagship phones like the Pixel 3 XL.
Technically the Note 7 should be able to capture some great low-light shots but these are just numbers.
The “48MP” Option in Pro Mode
The Redmi Note 7 does have a 48MP an option to capture 48 Megapixel photos in the Pro mode.
So how does that work when the snapdragon 660 does not support camera over 25 Megapixel. When the truth is, it’s not 48 Megapixels in fact this mode just captures a bunch of 12 Megapixel photos and interpolates them to create a 48MP shot.
Generally speaking, interpolation is just a software technique which is kind of like upscaling an image. So 48MP mode in the Redmi Note 7 is just a software technique and generally interpolation is known to ruin photos but the Redmi Note 7 does a fairly good job of this since the Note 7’s camera sensor since it actually has 48 million pixels so the isp has enough information to interpolate the image.. . . . . .
